Every Vote Counts as the Law Society Council BME seats are contested

The Law Society Council elections are looming and one of the contested seats is for ethnic minorities. Two seats are available and there are four candidates. Those looking for your vote are, in alphabetical order: Rajshree Chhatrisha, Frank Emilian D’Souza, Soophia Khan and Nwabueze Nwokolo.

Voting papers for the constituency are sent only to those Law Society members who have given explicit consent to receiving notices based on ethnicity. Anyone eligible to vote who has not already consented to receive voting papers should contact the Law Society before 26 June with their address and roll number. Voting will close on 3 July.

Nwabueze Nwokolo, a family mediator and mortgage specialist, has served as the Law Society Council member representing Minority Ethnic Concerns for the past four years. She is the current Chair of the Law Society Group Equality and Diversity Committee and a member of its Legal Affairs and Policy Board. Nwabueze is also Chair of the Black Solicitors Network Steering Committee for the Midlands and a director of its national executive.

Rajshree Chhatrisha is a current incumbent representing ethnic minorities on the Law Society Council. She is a senior consultant at MM&K, specialising in reward and remuneration issues for senior executives and employees. Rajshree is a qualified solicitor and has worked in private practice at several large organisations, including Mercer HR Consulting and PWC.

Frank Emilian D’Souza currently occupies a seat representing residential conveyancing on the Law Society Council. He has worked as a sole practitioner and spent more than 42 years in law, principally in conveyancing and litigation, both civil and criminal. Frank has served on the Solicitors Family Law Association’s (now Resolution) Sub-Committee on Custody & Access and on the Inaugural Committee of the Surrey Solicitors Family Law Association.

Soophia Khan is an assistant solicitor in the Consumer Litigation Department at Shoosmith’s Basingstoke office and qualified in 2006. She is a member of the Association of Women Solicitors, associate member of the Solicitors’ Associates of Higher Court Advocates and member of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers. When training she was elected treasurer and co-sponsorship secretary for the London Trainee Solicitors’ Group.
