News - News - Parosha picks up another top title at SAL awards ball

Parosha Chandran scooped her second top award in less than six months when she was named Pro Bono/Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2009 at the Society of Asian Lawyers (SAL) 14th Annual Ball. In October last year she won the prestigious title of Barrister of the Year at the Law Society’s Excellence Awards ceremony. Parosha, of 1 Pump Court Chambers, has acted in precedent-setting human trafficking and immigration cases. She works with a number of non-governmental organisations, providing support to victims of sex trafficking, forced labour and torture – in addition to giving lectures and providing training. The other winners were: His Honour Judge Abbas Mithani was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ball, held at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel. He has been a Circuit Judge in the Midlands since 2006 and is a Visiting Professor of Law at Newcastle University and an Honorary Professor of Law at Birmingham University. Mirza Ahmad, the Chief Legal and Monitoring Officer for Birmingham City Council, became Public Service Lawyer of the Year 2009 and a BLD Lawyer of the Month in April 2006. Farmida Bi, who joined Norton Rose as a partner in 2008, won Commercial Lawyer of the Year 2009. She is an expert in Islamic finance and was previously head of the Islamic Finance practice at Denton Wilde Sapte. Sailesh Mehta, of 2 Hare Court, was named Criminal Lawyer of the Year 2009. He is a barrister with over 20 years experience, specialising in serious crime, human rights and environmental law and is a founding member and former Chair of SAL and a BLD Lawyer of the Month in June 2007. Kishan Chandarana, an associate at Clifford Chance was the Young Lawyer of the Year award went to. Kishan attended Dulwich College and whilst at university served as vice president the National Hindu Students Forum and was a member of the Hindu Forum of Britain's Parliamentary Internships Programme Committee. |
