Matrix is a legal practice that was set up to modernise the environment in which barristers work and the way in which their professional practices are managed and developed.
Matrix has been running a successful programme of work experience placements since spring 2001. The aim is to give students on work placements a taste of work in a modern legal practice and busy office environment.
* The placements are aimed at attracting students doing GCSEs and A levels, or equivalent and usually aged between 14 and 19 years. Unfortunately Matrix does not take students at university level, although those thinking of applying for pupillage/traineeship can attend one of its student open days, and we are delighted that Matrix will be hosting a BLD student open day on 3 March 2009. Details to follow.
The duties students can expect to undertake during a work placement at Matrix include:
• Photocopying
• Filing
• Taking barristers’ papers to court
• Delivering documents
• Dealing with post
• Other ad hoc administrative duties
In selecting students for work experience Matrix actively seeks to promote equality of opportunity and access to the legal profession and employment. In accordance with its Core Values it gives priority to applications from students who can demonstrate that they would not normally be able to have the privilege of this type of work experience placement. Matrix particularly seeks applications from members of ethnic minority communities and those groups who would traditionally be under-represented in the legal profession and office environment. In order to help process your application you need to set out (by completing and returning the application form which can be found as a download on the Matrix website):
• What date you would like to go to Matrix (one week only)
• How you heard about Matrix
• Why you would particularly like to go to Matrix and why you have applied
• What your aims are for the placement and what you hope to achieve during it
• How you fit in to Matrix’s priority to promote access as explained above
In support of your application please ask a teacher/guardian/family friend to give a short testimonial explaining how they consider you would benefit from a placement with Matrix and why it would be appropriate to offer you such a placement.
Please don't hesitate to contact Lindsay Howell at Matrix on 020 7404 3447 if you would like to discuss any aspect of work experience at Matrix.
All application forms should be returned either by post or by email to:
