The Legal Aid Practitioners Group has announced the shortlist for the fifth Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year (LALY) awards. The awards are organised by grassroots lawyers for grassroots lawyers and they show recognition of the excellence among the otherwise unsung heroes of Legal Aid, whose dedication helps transform the lives and protect the rights of some of the most marginalised people in society. The shortlist has been chosen by a panel of judges, chaired by Cherie Booth QC. The nominees include: Colin Byrne, of Howard Byrne, whose nomination is for criminal defence work.Norman Hartnell, family law lawyer, of Hartnell Chanot. Chris Johnson, of Community Law Partnership. Michael Kennedy, of Switalskis, who acts for clients with severe mental health problems. John Gallagher, of the housing charity Shelter. LAPG Director Richard Miller said: "Legal Aid is under threat as never before. These awards highlight the life-changing work that these lawyers do, day in, day out - and also just what would be lost if the Government goes ahead with its ill-considered reforms to the Legal Aid scheme." The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 28 June 2007. |
