News - News - Victory for Shah's 'green' client

10 Nov, 2009
Shah Qureshi, a partner and Head of the Employment Department at Bindmans, one of the UK’s top Human Rights law firms, has featured in a landmark case. A judge sitting at an Employment Appeal Tribunal told Shah’s client, Tim Nicholson, that he could take his employer to a tribunal on the grounds that he was unfairly dismissed because of his views on climate change. Shah said after the ruling: "Essentially what the judgment says is that a belief in man-made climate change and the alleged resulting moral imperative is capable of being a philosophical belief and is therefore protected by the 2003 religion or belief regulations." Mr Nicholson was Head of Sustainability at Grainger plc - the biggest residential landlord in the UK but was made redundant in July 2008. He claimed his green beliefs had contributed to the firm's decision.
