News - News - Confidence is key for future BME lawyers

17 Sep, 2009
ALMOST 50 would-be lawyers celebrated their graduation from this year’s Legal Launch Pad (LLP) programme, aimed at kick-starting a career in the profession for BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) students, at top City law firm Lovells.

Confidence and the importance of good information were the theme of BLD founder and Managing Director Debo Nwauzu’s speech and the keynote address given by Barings Director and Group General Counsel Sandie Okoro, who presented the students with their certificates.

The programme takes place in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, although work placements include Northampton, too, and it offers successful candidates placements at law firms like DLA Piper, Lovells, Olswang, Pinsent Masons, Shoosmiths and Barclays Bank.  The students are also given training, attend workshops and are assigned to mentors. Applications for this year’s programme are still available, with the closing date for the receipt of application and supporting documentation at 4 pm on 30 November 2009.

Of the 49 successful participants, five have received firm offers of training contracts, 25 have been invited to submit for training contracts, 10 reached the second stage of interviews and three are considering multiple training contract offers.

Judith Shepherd, Barclays GRCB General Counsel and the Chair of its Diversity and Inclusion Group, welcomed everyone at the Ceremony, held on 10 September.
